#WHOI deep-sea biologist Tim Shank and ALVIN pilot Bruce Strickrott were exploring a deep-sea hydrothermal vent field along the East Pacific Rise (~200 miles off of western Mexico) when they turned off the vehicle lights and saw the vent chimneys silhouetted by a research camera system known as the MISO elevator. ALVIN is the only human-occupied submersible in the US capable of bringing three people as deep as 6500 meters, or nearly four miles! 📲Check out more mind-blowing milestones from ALVIN

🐋✨ Last week in Cape Cod Bay, WHOI researchers filmed these North Atlantic right whale moms and their calves. Grand Teton, one of the most prolific right whale mothers, is with her 9th calf. Accordion, named for the vessel strike injury across her back, is a first-time mother this year!⁠ As these critically-endangered whales migrate to New England waters for the spring and summer, we’re celebrating the 11 new mother-and-calf pairs spotted this season. 🎉 Though more calves are needed to replace
